Marine Claims Manager

A highly respected Insurance Company seek a senior level claims specialist with expertise in Marine Cargo and Liability who will be responsible for the management of the cargo claims team and accountable for business results through cost effective and timely resolution of claims. The role will involve handling high value Marine Cargo/Liability claims, managing the existing team and acting as a technical point of referral. There will also be an element of travel to conduct audits.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Perform a combination of the following duties in accordance with statutory, corporate and departmental regulations, written guidelines and best practice:
Ensure the cargo claims team delivers in the setting of timely and adequate reserves and authorisation of payments within the scope of given claims settling authority in the most cost-effective manner and in accordance with the company claims handling guidelines.
Lead the cargo claims team in achieving departmental and corporate goals and objectives
Undertake Effective Performance Management of the cargo claims team, identify and implement training and development opportunities
Handle referrals from the claims team, agree strategy and provide authority within agreed parameters
Maximise salvage and subrogation recovery potential
Work with internal and external business partners to sell the company brand and to seek new business opportunities
Management of vendors and vendor expense
Analyse claim activity, trends and unusual whole account features
Management and control of Third Party Claims Administrators including oversight of audit process, claim referrals, bordereaux processing and claim funds.
Auditing of cargo claims team, providing feedback and identifying training requirements.
Keep abreast of legal developments by way of statute updates, court decisions, regulations and trends and provide training to the claims team
Have a sound working knowledge of reinsurance and be able to manage reinsurance issues in collaboration with in-house reinsurance specialists
Encourage continuous improvement practices to optimise efficiency and expense savings
Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure, at a level appropriate to the position, that appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance



Skills, Knowledge & Abilities


Ability to effectively lead, coach and develop the claims team.
Technical expertise, claims resolution skills and knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices and procedures.
Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the company's internal and external business partners.
Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects.
Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position
